The battle starts with the Kalakeya soldiers charging in heavy numbers towards Mahismati. Bhallaldev then launches volley after volley of arrows using specially made weapons. This takes out a non-trivial number of enemies. Bāhubali then launches a boulder using catapult but that boulder doesn't do much damage. Bāhubali's soldiers then attach a cloth to 2 boulders and then launch both of them. This sends a big stretch of cloth flying in the air. It covers a lot of Kalakeya soldiers upon landing. The cloth doesn't hinder their progress much, since they can easily escape from it. But Bāhubali then launches a lit arrow and puts the cloth on fire. The cloth had been doused in fuel and thus easily the whole cloth catches fire. Bāhubali's soldiers then launch a bunch of such cloth attacks, thus creating a chaos in Kalakeya forces.
Meanwhile, the rest of charging soldiers have reached till the forces of Mahismati. Their path to enter Mahismati is block by Katappa and his soldiers who have formed a seemingly impenetrable barrier using their shields. Any enemy who gets near the barrier is killed by spears poked from between the shields.
Bāhubali and Bhallaldev along with their forces then start their land-battle against the oncoming Kalakeyas.
