Both the kids are shown growing together and getting similar training and education. Bāhubali is showed to be the compassionate and caring one. He also during one lunch session calls Katappa his mama (mother's brother). After growing up, both Bhallaldev and Bāhubali are shown to be equals in all aspects, be it fighting abilities or knowledge of scriptures and politics. This makes it a tough decision for Sivagami to choose one of them to be the king.
Meanwhile, one of Sivagami's trusted person steals some of court and kingdom's important secrets and flees with them. Sivagami sends both the princes in pursuit to recover him and the stolen secrets. They find him in a tavern and chase him to the edge of a cliff. The thief is shown to have sent a bird away with the secrets right before the princes arrive. After that he chooses death over being captured by those two and jumps off the cliff. Bāhubali throws a rope tied around him to Bhallaldev and jumps after the thief to catch him mid-fall. Now the evil intents of Bhallaldev start to be revealed when he initially lets the rope slip and Bāhubali fall to his death along with it. It is only when he sees Katappa arriving that he grabs the rope and pulls Bāhubali back-up. No one is any wiser of the true intents of Bhallaldev.
