Essay

It is the responsibility of government to ensure that it's country's major cities have the resources they need to thrive. There are many reasons to support this, though the reason given in question does not seem very strong. Some other reasons are explored and we'll also see why the given reason is unsupported.

The claim presented that governments must ensure that their major cities thrive and should provide any financial support if required by the cities for the same seems completely agreeable. It is because of many reasons, the most prominent of which is that cities are the backbone of any country's economy. They are the places where most of the trade, both domestic and international, takes place. Whenever some farmer wants to sell his produce in the market, he brings it to the city market. Similarly, almost all major ports have cities formed around them and these cities are vital since most of the intercontinental trade takes place via ships.

Other major reason that government should provide financial support for ensuring that cities thrive is that the effect of support and development provided to a city spreads to all of it's nearby villages since they all are interacting with the city. On the other hand, the development progress made in a village affects at-most it's neighboring villages since village-village interaction is not as prominent as city-village interaction.

The reason given for the claim does not seem too justified though. It is because culture and traditions are preserved by people and thus they will be preserved where more population of the country is. Take for example India, majority of it's population lives in villages and thus these villages are more responsible for the generation and preservation of India's culture and traditions. Cities also are more influenced by immigrants than villages are, thus this puts cities at a higher-risk position of diluting a country's culture with influences from other countries.

Overall, we can say that the claim that government has a responsibility towards survival of it's major cities sounds strong. But the reason given for the same that cities are places of generation and preservation of a country's culture and traditions seems way more shaky.
